Best Practices For Caring For Your Eyes

Health & Medical Blog

Failing to effectively care for your eyes is a significant mistake that can cause you serious problems as you age. While eye care is not a particularly difficult aspect of self-care, it is important for individuals to be aware of some of the factors that may have an impact on their overall ability to see.

Keep Your Blood Pressure Low

Many individuals don't appreciate the relationship between their blood pressure and their eyesight. However, it is possible for chronic high blood pressure to increase your chances of developing eye problems. This is due to the stress that this condition can put on the small blood vessels in your eyes. As a result of this, you should have regular eye exams done if you suffer from high blood pressure. These examinations test your vision so that any deterioration can be quickly corrected with the appropriate eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Protect Your Eyes Against Ultraviolet Light

Ultraviolet light is one of the leading sources of eye damage and problems for individuals. Unfortunately, some people assume that any sunglasses will be able to protect their eyes against this type of damage. However, only polarized lenses will effectively shield your eyes from these damaging rays of light. Additionally, it is important to avoid assuming that these glasses are only needed when the sun is shining brightly. Ultraviolet light can easily pass through clouds, and this can lead to damage occurring to your eyes. As a result, you should try to wear sunglasses whenever you plan to be outside during the daytime for long periods of time.

Undergo Yearly Eye Exams

Regular eye exams are very important. By undergoing these examinations, you will be able to ensure that any developing problems with your eyes are found and treated as quickly as possible. An example of these potential problems is cataracts. These are slowly developing growths that can eventually result in a person completely losing their ability to see. However, this is a problem that can be easily slowed with the use of prescription eye drops. Cataracts can also be permanently corrected by replacing the lenses. Without these regular eye exams, a person may not seek treatment until their condition is advanced, which can significantly reduce the range of treatment options that are available.

Hype up Your Hearing

I knew that my hearing wasn’t as good as it had once been, but I was still upset when my doctor told me that I had a significant hearing loss in both ears, and that I was going to need hearing aids if I wanted to participate more fully in my day to day life. But then I started researching hearing aids. I was thrilled to find out that there were small, barely visible aids that could help me hear without marking me as hearing impaired on first glance. Even better, the hearing aids were much more advanced than I’d thought. The ones that I chose can actually help cancel out environmental noise, like the clatter of a loud restaurant, so that I can focus on conversation with the waitress or the person across the table. My hearing aids have really improved my life.
