How To Use Outpatient Therapy To Your Advantage

Health & Medical Blog

If you've been dealing with a substance abuse problem and have gone through a rehabilitation program, you're now out and likely wondering how to maintain your sobriety.  There may be triggers everywhere, and you want to make sure that you continue to be clean so that you can live your daily life.  That means you'll need to put yourself on an outpatient therapy program so you can continue on the right path.  Use this information to learn more about what you can do after rehab to keep yourself on the right track.

Control Your Flow Of Ideas

The first thing you'll want to do to maintain your sobriety is control the flow of ideas that you entertain.  You need to hear ideas that are healing and progressive, instead of stunting and regressive.

It's so important for you to mind what you watch on television.  For example, the local news may show images of people drinking or smoking that could make you long for the days that you did the same.  It's time to get a new norm; you must become comfortable with new ideas so that you can get well.

The key is to change the ideas that you listen to.  If this means that you'll need to look up videos online that introduce you to ideas that you may not have heard of, go with it.  Change your frame of reference as it pertains to life so that you can get a new perspective that shows you that there is life outside of substance abuse.

Don't Miss Appointments With Your Counselor

The next thing you want to make sure you adhere to is the appointments with your counselor.  They are there to make sure that you're sticking to the straight and narrow path.  Failing to meet with them could mean that you regress.

Understand that even if you start to believe that you are better, there could still be some soft spots that you're overlooking.  Meeting up with old friends could push buttons, as could being in the presence of people who are still dedicated to the lifestyle that you've given up .  Your counselor is an objective third party who understands where you're coming from.  Getting their input could make a huge difference.

Don't think that you have to travel the road alone once you're out of substance abuse treatment.  Start using these tips right away so you can stay sober for the long haul.

Hype up Your Hearing

I knew that my hearing wasn’t as good as it had once been, but I was still upset when my doctor told me that I had a significant hearing loss in both ears, and that I was going to need hearing aids if I wanted to participate more fully in my day to day life. But then I started researching hearing aids. I was thrilled to find out that there were small, barely visible aids that could help me hear without marking me as hearing impaired on first glance. Even better, the hearing aids were much more advanced than I’d thought. The ones that I chose can actually help cancel out environmental noise, like the clatter of a loud restaurant, so that I can focus on conversation with the waitress or the person across the table. My hearing aids have really improved my life.
